FAQs

My seed paper order didn’t come with a planting guide or envelopes. What should I do?

Some of our seed paper products do not include a physical planting guide or envelopes. If your order did not come with one, no worries! Everything you need to know is right here.

What is plantable seed paper, and does it work?

Our seed paper is made from eco-friendly paper embedded with 6 US-origin wildflower seeds in each piece.

Yes, plantable seed paper works when placed in soil and properly cared for. Instead of tossing it out, you simply soak the paper, plant it under a thin layer of soil, keep it moist, and place it in a sunny spot. Over time, the paper breaks down and the seeds sprout, turning your gift into something that blooms. It’s a meaningful, sustainable way to celebrate and share joy.

What are the benefits of using eco-friendly seed paper?

Seed paper is a beautiful, sustainable gift option made from recycled materials and embedded with wildflower seeds. It helps reduce waste and grow something meaningful. It’s easy to plant and adds a charming, handcrafted touch to any card or gift. Best of all, it blooms into real flowers, turning your message into a lasting and joyful reminder.

What kind of seeds are in the paper?

Each seed paper includes a blend of the following wildflowers:

  • Snapdragon (Annual)
  • Petunia (Annual)
  • Beardtongue (Perennial)
  • Poppy (Annual)
  • Mountain Mint (Perennial)
  • Chamomile (Perennial)

This blend was selected to perform well across a range of growing zones in the U.S.

How long does seed paper last before it expires?

Seed paper doesn’t last forever, but with proper storage, it can stay viable for up to 1 to 2 years. Like all seeds, the ones embedded in seed paper can lose their germination strength over time, especially if exposed to heat or excessive moisture. To extend shelf life, store your unplanted seed paper in a cool, dry, and dark place. The better the storage, the better your chances of successful sprouting when you're ready to plant!

Should I soak seed paper before planting, and how does it affect it?

While pre-soaking is not required, it can help speed up germination. You may plant the seed paper directly in soil or soak it briefly before planting if preferred.

Soaking seed paper before planting softens the paper fibers and helps kickstart germination by providing seeds with the moisture they need. To do this, simply soak the paper in water for a few hours or overnight before placing it under a thin layer of soil. While most wildflower seeds benefit from soaking, a few exceptions, such as seeds with hard shells or naturally slow germination rates, may not require it. However, for our seed paper mix, soaking ensures the best chance for healthy sprouts and vibrant blooms.

How do I plant the seed paper?

  1. Choose a pot or outdoor space that receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  2. Tear or place the seed paper flat in the soil.
  3. Cover with just 1/8 inch of soil — a very light covering is all that’s needed.
  4. Keep the soil moist by watering daily for 4 to 6 weeks or until the seedlings are established.

Plants typically grow up to 3 feet tall and can tolerate partial shade.

How do I plant wildflower seed paper outdoors?

To plant wildflower seed paper outdoors, start by soaking the paper in water for about a minute to activate germination. Choose a sunny spot or container with well-draining soil, then place the paper on top and cover it with a thin 1/8 inch layer of soil. Keep the soil moist (but not soaked) and ensure the area receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Sprouts should appear in 1 to 2 weeks. Continue watering and thin out if needed.

Can I use seed paper for indoor planting?

Yes, seed paper can be planted indoors! Use a small pot with drainage holes and fill it with well-draining soil. Soak the paper in water, place it flat on the soil, and cover lightly with about 1/8 inch of soil. Keep the soil moist and place the pot in a sunny spot that gets at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily (or use a grow light if needed). Avoid extreme temperatures, and you’ll see sprouts in just a couple of weeks.

What’s the best way to germinate seed paper, or should I use soil or a paper towel?

Germination can begin as soon as 1 week, though it may take up to 6 weeks depending on your regional growing conditions.

The best way to germinate seed paper is by planting it directly in soil. Simply soak the paper first, place it on top of moist soil, and cover it lightly with about 1/8 inch of soil. Keep the area consistently moist (but not soaked) and make sure it gets plenty of sunlight. While germinating seeds in a paper towel can work for some types of seeds, seed paper is designed to be planted directly, making it easier, cleaner, and more effective for growing wildflowers.

Are there care tips for growing wildflowers from seed paper?

To help your wildflowers thrive, keep the soil consistently moist (not soggy) during the first 4–6 weeks and place your seed paper in a spot with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Use well-draining soil, and as the plants grow, thin out crowded areas to give each bloom room to flourish. A little care goes a long way!

What are some seed paper growing tips for beginners?

If you're new to planting seed paper, start by soaking it in water to activate the seeds, then plant it under a light 1/8 inch layer of soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, not soaked, and choose a sunny spot with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. Avoid planting in extreme temperatures, and don’t bury the paper too deep. With just a few simple steps, you’ll be growing blooms in no time!

Can seed paper grow in partial shade or low light?

Seed paper grows best with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it may sprout in partial shade, low light can lead to slower growth and fewer blooms. If planting indoors or in a shady spot, place the pot near a bright window or use a grow light to give your wildflowers the boost they need.

What type of soil works best for planting seed paper?

Seed paper grows best in light, well-draining soil that gives wildflower seeds the space and air they need to sprout. Avoid heavy or compacted soil, as it can trap moisture and prevent proper germination.

For best results, choose a potting mix labelled for flowers or herbs. Planting outdoors? Loosen the top layer of soil and mix in a bit of compost or sand to improve drainage and texture.

**Pro tip: Make sure your container or garden bed has good drainage since wildflower roots prefer moist, not soggy, conditions!
