Happy Birthday, Our Dear Earth — Let’s Check Out Some Fun Facts About It!

Happy Birthday, Our Dear Earth — Let’s Check Out Some Fun Facts About It!

Earth Day is just around the corner, and while many of us use the day to plant something green, pick up trash, or simply get outside and appreciate nature — it's also a great time to learn more about our incredible planet we call home. So in the spirit of Earth Day, we collected 10 fun and interesting facts about Earth and the holiday itself!

Whether you're a seasoned eco-warrior or just starting your green journey, we've gathered some fascinating tidbits about Earth Day and our remarkable planet that might surprise you. Are you ready?

1. Earth Day was inspired by Vietnam War protests

Back in 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson wanted to bring national attention to environmental issues after a major oil spill in California. Inspired by the energy of Vietnam War protests, he organized the first Earth Day as a grassroots demonstration to demand change — and it worked. Over 20 million people took part that first year!

2. Why Earth Day is at April 22?

Well, the date of Earth Day wasn’t chosen at random. Organizers wanted to rally college students, so they picked April 22 — a sweet spot between spring break and final exams when the weather was nice and campuses were buzzing.

3. Other countries call it “International Mother Earth Day”

The United Nations officially renamed it in 2009. While most people in the states still call it Earth Day, we love this more poetic global version — it’s a good reminder that this planet is home to all of us.

4. Earth Day has its own theme song

Written in 2013 by Indian poet Abhay Kumar, the “Earth Day Anthem” has been translated into all official UN languages. It’s not exactly a Top 40 hit, but it’s got heart!

5. Only 7 countries met WHO air quality standards in 2024

A recent IQAir report revealed that just seven countries — including Iceland, New Zealand, and Australia — met clean air standards last year. In the states, Los Angeles ranked as the most polluted major city, while Seattle had the cleanest air.

6. Earth isn’t perfectly round (it has a bit of a belly, just like our dad?)

We often picture Earth as a perfect sphere, but it's actually slightly squished. NASA says the planet bulges a little at the equator due to its rotation — by about 0.3%. Think of it as Earth’s version of a dad bod.

7. Theme changes every year for Earth Day

Each year, Earth Day focuses on a specific environmental issue. In 2024, it was “Planet vs. Plastics,” pushing for reduced plastic production by 2040. This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” spotlighting clean energy and the push to triple global renewable electricity by 2030.

8. Earth is 4.54 billion years old

That’s billion, with a “B.” Scientists have dated Earth’s age by studying both the oldest rocks here and meteorites from space. This planet’s been through a lot!

9. Our days are getting longer

When Earth first formed, a full rotation took only about 6 hours. Today, it takes 24 — and that’s still increasing. The planet’s rotation is gradually slowing down, adding 0.0017 seconds to the day every 100 years. But don’t worry, you won’t notice.

10. Gravity isn’t the same everywhere

Mountains, oceans, and underground rock formations all affect gravity. A satellite mission called GRACE maps these subtle shifts, helping scientists understand changes in sea levels and glaciers. So yes — you literally weigh a little more in some places than others.
